Las autoridades sanitarias de la provincia de KwaZulu-Natal, en la costa este de Sudáfrica, han confirmado que el balance de fallecidos por las fuertes lluvias registradas desde comienzos de semana ha aumentado ya a más de 250 personas.

La zona más afectada por las inclemencias meteorológicas son tanto la ciudad de Durban como su área metropolitana. De hecho, el presidente de Sudáfrica, Cyril Ramaphosa, se ha desplazado hasta Ntunzuma, a unos diez kilómetros de la mencionada localidad, desde donde ha ofrecido declaraciones.

“Esta es una catástrofe de enormes proporciones y debemos actuar con rapidez para ayudar a las comunidades afectadas (...) La búsqueda de personas desaparecidas aún está en curso”, ha trasladado el presidente, según recoge el portal de noticias News24.

Ramaphosa ha apuntado que otras provincias cercanas enviarán ayuda a KwaZulu-Natal bien con recursos económicos, material o personal, y ha informado de que desde el Gobierno se está trabajando para aplicar un estado de desastre en la provincia.

Los equipos de emergencia siguen inmersos en las labores de rescate, si bien las autoridades locales aún no se han aventurado a ofrecer una cifra, aunque sea preliminar, de los heridos y desparecidos.

Las fuertes lluvias e inundaciones han dejado imágenes dantescas en redes sociales como vehículos arrastrados por la corriente, viviendas destruidas e incluso un vídeo en el que se aprecian restos óseos de un cementerio de la ciudad que han salido a la superficie por los movimientos de tierra.

Ya en el año 2019 Sudáfrica fue escenario de unas fuertes tormentas similares a las de esta ocasión y en la que las inundaciones se cobraron la vida de más de 80 personas.
